1996 Survey: Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) reported 2,639 manatees within the waterways of Florida during the Feb/96 synoptic (aerial) survey. Although synoptic survey's are not the most reliable method of counting manatees it is the one most often used by the FDEP and is our only current means of determining the overall manatee population. Due to outstanding weather conditions, the FDEP obtained better than usual results this year. The January 1995 synoptic survey reported 1,443 manatees and the February 1995 report showed 1,832 (increase due to better weather conditions). Hopefully the '96 survey numbers indicate an increase in the overall population and not just better survey conditions.
