This manatee bares the marks of an unfortunate encounter with human technology. Propeller scars like this aid park rangers and wildlife researchers in identifying manatees. You might also see a letter "branded" on the backs of some manatees. This painless identification mark helps track the manatees too.

Manatees must surface to breath like whales, porpoises, and dolphins. Instead of a blow hole like the aforementioned cetaceans, sirenians have nostrils.
